A proposal to transform the old Meethotamulla rubbish site into an urban park for which Rs 400 million was to be spent, faces several environmental problems.

The project to convert the Meethotamulla landfill into an urban park was to be completed by 2023.

However, even though the Meethotamulla landfill has been abandoned, methane has accumulated and sewage continues to flow into the area.

Among many opinions regarding the best method for developing areas where garbage was once dumped, converting it to city parks was considered the most appropriate solution, as it is a proven method in many countries.

After the tragedy, the Colombo City Council (CMC) stopped dumping garbage in Meethotamulla.

Due to the inability to move the trash or recycle it on site, plans were made to make it an urban park and some plants were hastily planted by Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali. Champika Ranawaka.

Even though work on the urban park has started, construction work is currently halted due to the pandemic.

Urban Development Authority director MM Anura said the project is moving slowly as a number of families are illegally occupying the area.

“The earth where the waste is buried in layers has now been compressed to make it more solid,” he said.

He also said the mound, which once stood 50 meters high, is now reduced to 33 meters.

“All measures will be taken to ensure that no damage is caused to the inhabitants of the region during the construction of the urban park,” said Mr. Anura.

He said the area was being scientifically reclaimed as directed by experts from the National Building Research Organization (NBRO). He also said that a blended development program with the help of foreign private sector investors was also being considered for Meethotamulla.

NBRO officials said if another landslide occurred in the future it would not cause much damage as people were evacuated from the area.

Debris from the disaster is still being removed and nearby canals are being cleaned up. Meanwhile, an underground piping system is to be put in place to remove the leachate, and plans are underway to release the gas coming out of the landfill as well, they added.

He added that the installation of machines for cleaning sludge from old waste has also been halted due to the interruption of the project.

A mother from Katoomba has launched an urgent appeal to ensure the health and safety of local children returning to school after the COVID-19 lockdown.

Natalie Beak has launched an e-petition to the New South Wales Parliament to ensure adequate ventilation is installed and maintained in primary schools. There are already 5,700 signatures.

Ms Beak, whose son Archie, 7, attends Katoomba Public School, said the Education Department’s current COVID security measures – ensuring windows and doors can be opened – were not not sufficient.

About 51,000 air purifiers are being deployed to schools in Victoria. Ms Beak was awaiting a similar decision in New South Wales – a decision that did not come.

“I talked about our P&C [about the issue]. It was after Victoria announced that they were providing filters … it was the only thing I could think of. So far we have had a great response from teachers and parents who have shared it on social media. ”

Toray Industries, Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) has received an order to supply reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for the Rabigh 3 desalination plant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “The hydrogel is a multifunctional hydrophilic polymer that can bring about a revolution and curb water scarcity. Plus, it’s very efficient and can be mass produced, ”Guihua Yu, associate professor at Cockrell School of Engineering, Texas, said in a press release.

The hydrogel tablet can purify a liter of water in an hour. The method offers an additional advantage as the purification does not require energy and does not form any harmful by-products. The methods we commonly use require thermal energy (boiling) or solar energy. The use of solar energy causes an accumulation of microbes. This ends up slowing down and shutting down the system.

Some countries have introduced mandatory front-of-package labeling in hopes of improving people’s diets and reducing the burden of illnesses associated with unhealthy diets. These labels can be color coded to indicate nutrition, or they can warn consumers about unhealthy characteristics of products. However, studies on the impact of such labeling have produced mixed evidence.

To help clarify the impact of front-of-package nutrition labels, Song and his colleagues analyzed data from 134 peer-reviewed studies published between January 1990 and May 2021. They applied an analytical method known as network meta-analysis in order to integrate the results. studies and assess the impact of four different labeling systems, two that use color coding and two that use disclaimers.

This meta-analysis showed that all four labeling systems appeared to be beneficial in encouraging consumers to purchase more nutritionally beneficial products. The assessment of specific nutritional qualities revealed that the labeling encourages consumers to choose foods and beverages that are low in energy, sodium, fat and saturated fat.

The analysis also highlighted psychological mechanisms that may underlie the different strengths of different labels, due to their impact on consumers’ understanding of nutritional information and the resulting changes in attitudes towards unhealthy foods or healthy. Color-coded labels appeared to be more beneficial in promoting healthier purchases, and warning labels were more effective in discouraging unhealthy purchases.

These findings could help guide and refine front-of-package labeling policies to improve public health. At the same time, future research could build on this study by addressing related concepts, such as the impact of labeling on product reformulation by the food industry or the longer-term benefits of labeling on the food industry. buying behavior.
